Show Scribe Continues Scout Jamboree Travel Account On Monday July 3 some of the great baseball fans of our group went to Philadelphia to see the Phillies and the Braves play a baseball game. We had a real fine sectional meeting that night which was com prised of music, singing and many other talents.There were 1500 boys in our section and 34 troops. David Seegmiller was one of the important buglers at Valley Forge. . The night of the 4th we had a very fine pageant where Gen. "Ike" Eisenhower spoke to us on our heritage. And then we had $5,000 in fire works display. On July 5 our troop and about 7000 other boys went to Philadelphia Philadel-phia for a tour of the city.. Some of the things that we saw were Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, the Betsy Ross home, and many more of interest. On our return to Valley Forge a few of the boys got off at Nor-ristown Nor-ristown arid went swimming at the YMCA and then hitch-hiked back into Valley Forge. Thursday July 6 we broke camp. We had to have our equipment packed and loaded in the train at 2:30. We spent the rest of the day swapping. LeVoy Robison was called cal-led "The Swapping King of Troop 22." Whenever we couldn't swap with the other boys we would let LaVoy take our swapping things and he would always come back with the thing that we wanted. That night we had our closing ceremonies which were made up of all foreign boys. We all went back to camp and waited until 12:30 before we could board the train. We left for Washington, Wash-ington, D. C. at 1:30. We arrived in Washington on July 7, at 8:30 and took our equipment equip-ment to the Harrington hotel and boarded busses and started on a tour of the city. Some of the most interesting things that we saw were the Dept. of Justice, which includes the FBI departmnt, Washington monument U. S. Capitol, Supreme Court build ing and the White House. We, crossed the Potomac River to see the George Washington Mansion. On July 8 we had a free day and could do anything that we .wanted. Most of the boys went to the Smithsonian Institute while others tried to catch up on their sleep. At 1:30 we went to the Washington Wash-ington ward chapel for our services ser-vices for Sunday. We left Washington Wash-ington at 8:45. We arrived in St. Louis at 5:15 p. m. on the 9th of July. There we boarded busses and went to Forest Park where we had our supper. Afterwards we rode on rol-lercoasters rol-lercoasters and many other thrilling thrill-ing things. i We had the most enjoyable trip home, arriving in Provo about 2:30 p. m. July 11. We as a troop did so appreciate having Principal Seegmiller with us. He helped us enjoy everything to the fullest. And I know our parents were happy to have him with us. Richard Snow, Scribe. |
