Show Margene Miller Helped By Trial Of Blood Change Margene Miller, 14-year old dau ghter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Miller, of Delta, at the LDS hospital in Salt Lake City, is reported slightly better today. Margene was taken to the hospital hos-pital the second time a week ago, in a critical condition, with acute nephritis. There it was found that she. was suffering from acute hem olytic anemia, and doctors decided to try to exchange all the diseased diseas-ed blood in her body for new blood,. MODERN MIRACLE Late Saturday the transfusion was made, and in a 12-hour operat ion, ten pints of new blood were given Margene, while the old was drained off. So far as physicians from the dept. of Medicine, U of U college of medicine, are able to determine, this is the first time in medical history that the complete com-plete transfusion has been used for this particular type of disease. The Salt Lake, Tribune, on Wednesday, August 10, carries car-ries a picture and second article ar-ticle on Margene Miller. It states that Tuesday she was reported to be making a "good recovery." The picture shows Margene, propped up in her hospital bed, and looking look-ing better. Her case ,a medical medi-cal first, has received wide and sympathetic attention, as evidenced by an offer made Tuesday in Reading, Pa., by Carolyn Gagneux, to give some of her own blood to Margene. IMPROVING Cause of the disease in some cases is not known, but it appears to be due to a sensitization in which healthy blood cells are destroyed. des-troyed. Margene has been ill all summer. When she was taken to the hospital the second time she was given oxygen from Friday to Sunday, and blood transfusions. Word from her parents Tuesday morning said that Monday she had drunk "water , eaten ice-cream, and read her ow'n mail. Doctors on the case had postponed vacations planned pla-nned to remain on her case. It was stated that it would be 10 days before definite conclusions could be made of the benefit of the transfusions and blood change. BLOOD DONERS The operation exhausted the LDS hospital supply of blood of the type needed, and an .appeal was made for donors. Delta 2nd ward members ,and others, making mak-ing several carloads, plan to go to Salt Lake Sunday to give blood Last Thursday 5 Deltans, Kent Prestwich, Bob Hortin, Kenneth Fullmer, Phil Rawlinson and John Daly Jr., went to Salt aLke City and each gave blood on the Miller ( case. |
