Show Ideologic Party Visits Antelope Springs Area I Saturday David J. Varnes, U. S. Geological Survey, Denver, and the following members of his party, Paul L. Weis, LeRay Tucker, and August Van Horn, were piloted to the trilobite deposits near Antelope Ante-lope Springs by Frank Beckwith Sr. The party found "time markers" of the three Cambrian periods, as follows: Lower Cambrian, Agnostus, both weathered loose and still fast in their matrix, the latter being in Ute "Timpe khanitza pachavee," or water bug like stone house in. Middle Cambrian, Ptychoparia kingi Meek, or more recently called call-ed Elrathia. This is the common trilobite tri-lobite of the area. For Upper Cambrian, they found the rather rare Orria Elegans (named Walcott's teamster, Dan Orr the "elegant trilobite.) Also several very good tail pieces of Ne-ollenus, Ne-ollenus, which is sharply spined, and large. One specimen, if all restored, re-stored, would be about 6 inches long. They also found Obulus, a species spe-cies of Brachiopod; this lowly form is termed in geology a "persistent" form that is, it is NOT extinct but persists as a living animal today. to-day. Hence it cannot be used as a "time marker". Mr. Varnes found a small, but very fine colored Dendrite (in Ute, Shenaub-a-pope, or a message on a trail done by their god Shenaub. We did not find a lightning crystal." The trip was very successful, and yielded fully the results sought. The party wants to find vertebrate fossils, such as fish mammals, or anything with an actual vertebra, but limited to the deposits of old Lake Bonneville. If anyone knows of such kindly let me know for their use. |
