Show LENROOT ELECTED FROM THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Throughout the country, there will be a feeling of relief re-lief at the result in Wisconsin. There was a general fear that there might be enough traitors in the state to elect Berger in a three-cornered contest. . Thefilection of Lenroot wifl'bring universal satisfaction. Davies, the defeated Democratic Candidate, points out justly that Mr. Lenrtfot received enough votes to win because be-cause he promised in all his speches to support the president's presi-dent's war measures. It is somewhat regrettable that Mr. Davies was not sufficiently chivalric during the campaign cam-paign to withdraw and give Mr. Lenroot a free field, but he was somewhat handicapped in taking such a generous gen-erous and patriotic step by the fact that he was the president's presi-dent's candidate. We may give the president credit for the best of intentions; we may assume that he wanted to make the issue of loyalty sa dear that no one could dodge it, and yet we may be convinced, that he blundered in giving giv-ing his unqualified supportto Davies. .. In these days when the, Republicans and Democrats in congress forget partisanship to support the president's plans, the president should forget partisanship and stay out of state elections. There are times when the president, presi-dent, as the leader of his party, may at least be forgiven for taking part in a state election, but they must be the pleasant times of peace, when the issues are more or less political and domestic. The disgrace of Milwaukee is complete, but the country will sympathize with the loyal people of the community com-munity for being compelled to live among such an army of traitors. The re-election of Hoan as jnayor is a bolt upon the escutcheon of Milwaukee, not by reason of the fact that he is a Socialist,, but because he drew his support sup-port .so largely, from traitors! The elcetion has server-some good .ends. It has enlightened en-lightened the American people concerning their German nieghbors. It jhas, in he !first t place, shown that the majority of them are loyal nd aye for, America first and always. But it has shown that a very large proportion of them have eaten our breadafiiproswred'tp suport th Kaiser in his efforts to rul&the world. " Chief among these kaiserites are the German Socialists. Social-ists. We wish to stress this point, because we have- declared de-clared on more than one occasion that Socialism is a German Ger-man institution and that its propaganda is.insincere. In and out of Germany, except for a comparatively few radi cals, it is the agent of Teutonic despotism. Fortunately, it is loshig casta in thw country, us-is revealed by the results re-sults of the ejections in Chicago, where the Socialist vote was 10,000 less, than in the judicial campaign of a year ago. We wish to infer, and probably are correct in our inference, that the American people are gradually awakening awak-ening to the fact that Socialism, as an organization, if not as body of doctrine, is simply a German-made propaganda designed to do th$ kaiser's dirty work throughout the world.
