Show NEWS VS. REPUBLICAN. Tiik Kkpuiimcan must be a pretty hard proposition. The Deserct News says so, and what The News sas must be so -even though It bo proved otherwise. Tho News sajsTiiK Re-vuiiLicA.v Re-vuiiLicA.v Is' so low that It "will not stoop to touch It or Its scurrilities," and then It jumps onto the Journal, evidently In tho belief that that publication pub-lication is not beyond redemption. Wc hope The News is not mistaken so fai as The Journal Is concerned. Hut going back to the original proposition- what is it that has brought Tiik Rki-uhmcan so far down In the opinion of the gentleman who does the word Juggling on tho editorial page of the Deseret News? Tiik Rki'uiilican's "continual at tacks on Tho News" it says, and tho abuslvo, silly burlesques of gentlemen oi high reputo" in Salt Lako city. As to the latter part of tho News's objection Tim Rkiuiii.ican is will-Ing will-Ing to confess that It has the unhappy faculty of making Itself understood. Had we the llncsse and suavo addiess acquired by tho distinguished editor of The News in his many years of raaking.thlngs appear as they are not our criticism ot the Salt Lako "gen tlemen of high repute" would probably probab-ly bo more pleasant to his super sensitiveness, sensi-tiveness, but wo havo not yet had that experience which leads us to believe that It is cither inoro courteous or moro cffcctlvo to use ten lines and an oratorical nourish in calling a man a picvarlcator when three word? will sulllcc. Wc arc Inclined to believe that there is a certain clement of worth In directness. Tiik Rki'uhlican's "continual attacks" at-tacks" on The News to which that paper objects Is the pointing out rather forcibly of a decided misrepresentation misrepre-sentation In that paper, which through a lapso of some kind The News itself exposed. On Sunday, April 2, Tho Nows contained the following editorial paragraph: "If the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Haivard University can merge to advantage, why can not the Unlvcisity of Utah and the Agricultural Agri-cultural College do the same thing." Tiik Hki'uiimuan tookmp this matter mat-ter and in language to which even the Prophet himself could not object, It was set out that theic had been no consolidation, that both schools were run Independently, that Harvard didn't want the Technology Institute, that Prcs. Elliott, of Harvaid, had adylscd against such a move. The News did not have the grace to admit this and Inform Its readers properly. However, on Thursday, April 8, The News contained tho following paragraph: para-graph: "Harvard and Technology giaduatcs arc having a regular monkey and parrot par-rot time over the proposed merger. Culture and science appear to havo laid aside their manners during the continuance of the dispute." Tills paper then called attention to tho deckled vailanco In the two articles. arti-cles. The llrst was designed to lead the people to believe that consolidation consolida-tion had been accomplished, and tho inference in-ference left that that consolidation w as a great success. Thosecondsqulb tells plainly that there Is now apioposltlon to consolidate, and those who know of this matter know that It Is the revival reviv-al of an old light that has alwajs been lost. Tiik RKWMiLioANsald that The News, with the other Salt Lake pa-pers,has. pa-pers,has. shown nodlspositlon to be fair in this light against the A. C. ofU., the people's school, and we leave It with you as to whether our statement is correct, Judging from the above and former utterances of Tho News. |
