Alex Smith, son of John II. Smith of the Fifth ward of this city came up from Ogden a few days ago. Alex Smith has been In Ogden for the past six weeks, being treated for typhoid. Normally he is a line specimen of manhood, man-hood, weighing 202 pounds, with no cxccsslon llesh. The disease, however, has taken 60 pounds of Mesh from him and he looks emaciated and weak. His many friends hope to see him thoroughly thor-oughly restored without any back sets. On Wednesday at 5 p. m. about forty for-ty feet of Hume attached to the Dcs-crct Dcs-crct mills broke down. Owing to no overflow gate being close the canal bank east of the mill was In great danger.of being washed away. It will involve quite an expenditure to replace re-place the Hume. A pile driver will have to be used In replacing the damaged dam-aged mill race as there is at least twelve feet of quicksand on the east side of tho mill. The mill will necessarily neces-sarily be closed down while repairs arc being made. On Labor day C. H. Spencer and A. J.Turner, of thiscity.went up Cowley canyon In search of chickens. Ilefore long they spied what they believed was a big black bear. Taking their positions behind some clumps of brush they blared away with their shot guns, two barrels each of bird shot. When they picked themselves from the underbrush Into which the heavy dischaige had kicked them, no bear was seen, but a great big black tree stump that was once In that vicinity Is now missing. Spencer claims ho hit the animal clear in the eye, but there is a strong suspicion that what he thed at was a knot hole in that slump. Joseph Jones, special agent of the O. S. Lm was In Logan Thursday. Mr. Jones aided In the capture of one of the robbers who recently held up the express agent at Kemmercr. Mr. Jones states that on the morning of August 31st, the express company brought to Kcmmeier $12,000 in currency, cur-rency, and $900 in silver. After the train pulled out and while the express kvmattor was on the truck, three masked mask-ed men came from the west side of the track and held up the agent and tlie guard. The saclcontalnlng the silver sil-ver was taken for gold and the robbers rob-bers not looking for fin ther plunder left the $12,000 In currency which was under some mall sacks and escaped. The robbcis arc purported to be Pap Reed, an old O. S. L. switchman Kid Riley and Punch Glover, a stepson step-son of the notorious Hob Tartar, who was well known by the early settlers as being a despeiato character around the Cottonwood and Hlngham canyons In the 70's. Within forty-eight hours after the robbery, Kid Riley went to an acquaintance named Murphy to solicit aid In the purchasing of a suit of clothes. Murphy informed the of-tlcers of-tlcers and when the robber came for tho clothes ho was captured. He Informed In-formed on the remainder of the gang named above. Pap Reed was captured captur-ed without lesistancc on Wednesday at a ranch at the head of Green liver. Hunch Glover, It is thonght.Is enroute for Jackson's Hole or Yellowstone Park and his early capture is anticipated, antici-pated, as a posse Is in pursuit. The four men who captured Kid Riley were Peter Naylln, marshal of Kemmercr, Kem-mercr, Jonathan Jones, deputy sheriff of Uinta county, Wyo., loute agent Lovcsy and special agent Joseph Jones, who is well known In this city. These four gentlemen are entitled to tho $1,000 reward that was offered for the capture of either of the robbers. |
