Show Vermont, Three weeks ago Democratic newspapers news-papers were Jubilant over prospects In Vermont and made much of the assertion that a republican plurality plu-rality of less than 2o,000 in that state meant a Democratic victory In the presidential election. In order to reduce re-duce the Vermont plurality the Democratic Dem-ocratic national committee put the best speakers Into the state, even our own Frank J. Cannon making this long trip to be of service. Tons of literature were sent into Vermont and great gobs of campaign money were sent into that state in an effort to turn the tide. As election day approached, Democratic Demo-cratic newspapers, slightly fearful of the result, raised the limit to 30,000. They claimed that a Republican plurality plu-rality of less 'than :!0,000 in Vermont meant a Republican defeat nationally, national-ly, the Inference being that a plurality plu-rality that large or larger "meant Republican Re-publican success nationally. Roth sides hustled and tho result of the hustling was Indicated last Tuesday by a Republican plurality 'of 32,000. Taking Democratic claims and assertions as a basis, that party Is doomed to defeat nationally, but without Vermont's remarkable showing show-ing that was a foregone conclusion anyway. This computation and prognostication prognostica-tion in ujilcli Vermont figures as the barometer is due to the fact that In 1SS4 tlie Republican plurality In Vermont Ver-mont was but 23,000 and Cleveland was elected. In 181)2 tlic Republican plurality In that suite was but 10,000 and Cleveland went in on a land slide. These are tlic only times in which Vermont gave a plurality of less than 23,000. It's now up to the Democrats to admit that they absolutely have no show in the coming election, or else aie false prophets as well as false doctrinarians. |
