Show Cigarette Law. The use of cigarettes among bojs, mere children in fact, Is so common nowadays that it docs not occasion suipilseany more, yet tho Injurlous-ness Injurlous-ness of the little "plmpstlcks" is not less than it was when it was deemed almost a crime for any young man to be found with one of them In Ills mouth, .lust why bos are permitted to Indulge in this practice Is not known and whcio, when and how they got the mixture to roll the coilln-nails Is a matter of conlcctuie, but for the bcnetlt of both the consumer and the peison who so thoughtlessly sells to boj suitder eighteen, we reproduce a portion of the Utah law bearing on this subject: "To whom It may Concern: Section Wiu, Revised Statutes of Utah, 18H.S, provides that 'Any peison who shall sell, gie or furnish any cigar, cigarette or tobacco In any fonn, or any opium or any other naicolic In any form to any person under 18 years of age in this state shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and, upon conviction thcicof, shall bo tlued In any sum not less than 810 nor nioic than $100. The piovislons of this section shall not apply ap-ply to the use, sale, giving or furnishing furnish-ing of any naicotlu upon the prescription prescrip-tion of aphjslclan. "Chapter 13."i, session laws, 11)03, ap-pioved ap-pioved Match 2:1, HMM, piovldcs that Any peison under the age of 18 years who shall buy. accept or have in his IKissevslon any cigar, clgaictte or to-mwo to-mwo In any loi in. or any opium or any other naicotlu in any form, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor." The law leads about proper and Is certainly to the point. Tho dealer who will sell a clgaictte to a boy whom ho has leason to believe Is not yet eighteen deserves the full penalty of the law. And It Is by no means a I bad Idea that the boy who Is found . with these infernal, nnuse, itlng, lioaltli destioylng machines should also be arrested and made to feel the majesty of the law. Ills parents would piob-ably piob-ably hao to foot the bill, but parents who permit their boys to Indulge, knowingly, deseno to be reminded of their criminal carelessness. It has been stated that a ccitaln society so-ciety is about to start a crusade! against the habit and hopes to have this law enforced so far as Logan is concerned. Force Is seldom the best thing to employ In cases of this kind, yet it might bring to minds of parents their duties In regard to the matter. |
