Thlrty-olght thousand dollars was tho prlco paid for a Persian rug at tho auction sale In Now York of the art collections of tho late Henry O. Marquand. Tho rug was woven In the fifteenth century as a gift from the Pasha of Persia to tho Sultan of Turkey, for tho roconl held by Mr. Marquand showed that It had been found among tho effects of the Sultan Sul-tan Abdul Aziz aftor his death. Asldo from tho marvelous color and texture, which Is over fivo hundred knots to tho SfTo Inch, tho fcaturo of tho rug Is that the Inscriptions throughout Us border, bb well as arabesques ara-besques In tho medallions of the design, aro woven In silver thread. It Is a companion piece for the famous carpet owned by the Prince Aloxls Lobanow Rostowsky, which wns shown In tho Vienna Museum's exhibition In 1889. Tho Itostowsky rug was supposed to be without a parallel In tho world, but this carpet, tho most hlgpv valuod ainung tho toxtllo treasures of Mr. Marquand, contains posltlvo Internal evidence that It was mado upon the jamo looms and In lln sumo pcrlJ-J, and doubtless for tho samp purposo as that of Prince Lobanow, which also passed Into the possession of Its present owner directly from the seraglio ser-aglio In Constantinople. So far as can bo ascertained this carpet Is tho highest class oriental fabric now In exlstonce in this country. |
