Representative J Committee Will Advertise Superiority of Utah Peaches H And Apples. Dr. John A. Widtsoe Hl Heads General Committee 1 The fruit growing Industry lu Utnh is teaching a crisis. We havo ono of the largest fruit crops in our history to market this season. Failure ,to market it profitably will be n severe blow to this grent Industry nnd will tear down several years of hard work which has been done to build up tho ft tilt business. Not only will future planting bo retarded, but tho present orchard land values will bo reduced. The fruit business of Utah represents a total Investment In excess ot $30,-000,000. $30,-000,000. Tho situation on this year's crop Is as follows: Estimated peach crop 1,725,000 cases cas-es valued at $500,000; estimated apple crop 500,000 boxes valued at$400,000i pears, plums, prunes, and other fruit vnluod nt $100,000; total crop to market, $1,000,000. This does not include in-clude local consumption. ( So tho stato Is facing tho problem of marketing a million dollar crop. That Is for this year alone. Only nbout thirty porcent of the trees now planted are In bearing, so the problem prob-lem In the next flvo years will reach a total considerably greater than this. The difference of ono cent per case Is the selling prlco of peaches means ovr $17,000 to the state. Feeling the pressing need ot publicity pub-licity to help create a market for this crop, a meeting was called by tho Hoard ot Governors of the Utah Development League which met In Salt Lake, July 19, at which more than thirty business men and fruit growers of the state were present.
