Secretary Arthur Hooker of the National Irrigation Irriga-tion congress was yesterday reminded remind-ed of the fact that.slxty-flve years ago today. Wllford Woodruff a member mem-ber of the first company of Mormon pioneers to come to Utnh, began digging dig-ging tho first ditch In Salt Lake, tho forerunner of the great modem system sys-tem of Irrigation that has redeemed so much desert land since that time. It Is said by surviving members of that company that Mr. Woodruff began be-gan his ditch digging nbout where is now located tho intersection of Third South and Stato streets. At that time City creek's natural channel ran down out- of tho canyon to near that point and' turned oft to the southwest. As soon as he hnd selected his pros pective garden Bpot Mr. Woodruff commenced to bring n portion of the wnter out of tho creek onto IiIb ground. Others followed, each In his own way, and with his own selection ot land, to causo tho ground to yield sustenance of some sort before tho season became too far advanced. It was out ot this small beginning that Irrigation In Utnh envolved Itself. |
