Show BRIGHAM YOUNG'S BIRTHDAY. It was a very happy thought of the Deseret Evening News to publish some of the sermons of Urlgham Young last Saturday evening In commemoration of his birthday. They show one of the most likeable and admirable sides ofhischaracter and one that is not as will known as it should be to tho rising generation. Aover the United States Urlgham Young is known and respected as a colonizer and statesman, states-man, as one of the tlrst to point out and develop the possibilities of the arid west, and among his own people ho is revered as a prophet. These sermons ser-mons Indicate a sturdy common sense and good judgment that should commend com-mend him to all. It Is the typically American quality, the Yankee in him, that puts him on a par with Benjamin Franklin. The sermons of Brlgham Young arc full of the same terseness, tho same shrewdness, the same sympathy sym-pathy for mankind and understanding of Its weaknesses that distinguish the sayings of Poor Richard. They are adapted to the needs of all people and especially to the needs of his people peo-ple who found themselves confronted with many problems in their new state which they had not met In the east. Urlgham Young is a national character and everyone owes him a debt of gratitude for his work, but the people of Utah are' still more Indebted In-debted to him, and his birthday should be a eailv reminder of .how much they we to this ptophet, preacher and pioneer. |
