Show ) U.A.C.Com- I mencement I Sermon by Mr. Nephi I Morris. H The A. G. auditorium was a pleas- H ant sight last Sunday morning, lb was H well tilled with townspeople and stu- H dents. Pretty hats and gowns were everywhere. In the llrst seats sat Hj thegravoand reverend candidates for degrees, whtlo on the front row on H the platform were the president, the B members of the board, Mr. Morris, and H other dignitaries wUh the faculty M modestly in the rear. After two selections from Mendelsohn's St. Paul m by the college quartette and a prayer 1 ' by Judge Hart, Mr. Nephl Morris gave H one of the most vigorous and manly H baccalaureate sermons that have ever P been preached in Logan. Like all H layman discourses it emphasized the M material rather than the spiritual B side of life. In Ills opening quotation H from Emerson he struck the keynotes B of his sermon: M "Cast the bantling on the rock, B Suckle with the she woll's teat, m Wintered with the hawk and fox, m Power and speed be hands and feet." 1 Just as these sturdy lines show B , what experlen cedid for Romuuls B and Remus, so they show us how lm B portant are effort and determination B , ( in this school of lire. We are what we a choose to let experience make us and H the curso of being compelled to earn H our living by the sweat of our brow is B in reality a blessing. The hand Is the HBjl symbol of the work wo all must do in K order to subdue the earth. Backed B up by mind and disciplined by sorrow, B relying on Qod and not on ourselves, H we can, It we will, move mountains. H The benefit of trial and sorrow, so B beautifully described by Goethe in his Bi we'1 known poem, were dwelt on at B much length by the speaker. Starting B with Christ. the"man of sorrows, "and" K ranging through Washington, Ethan B Allen, and other historical characters B djwn to Togo, he showed iiow Impor- Hj tant is hardship in forming the bed- m I rock of character. Bo excellent a B sermon won that almost unheard of K thing in religious circles, hearty ap- B plause, as did alsojthe last musical B ' selection. There is no reason why we B should not applaud religious exerciees, B but good taste usually condemns it. B Bishop Anderson pronounced the clos- B ,nK Praver ana" continued in it tl.o B ,dea of the speaker that infinite pro- B l Kress Is possible to us all and that B perfection may be reached through ef- B fort; certainly helpful and stlmulat- B Ing Ideas for a senior or for anyone. |
