Show Expert On The Quartette Impressions of Concert ' at the Pavilion. Tho writer docs not presumo to know whether the A. C. String Quartette In its concert Wednesday evening brought out the "elegance or form, symmetry, simplicity, clearness of outline, out-line, and perfection of development" Intended by tho composers of tho music mu-sic they interpreted, and at tho risk of being thought a barbarian .we dare venture tho assertion that nine-tenths of those who pretend to see, understand under-stand and appreciate such wondrous things in tho various spasms of "classical" "clas-sical" compositions In reality sec no further than the capacity of their ears and souls to absorb peculiar melody-yet, melody-yet, with tho single exception of tho Haydn (Ellgh-dn, please) movement, wo enjoyed that program to tho limit. There were a lot of other plugs there who don't know "allegro" from "Filipino" "Fil-ipino" and we believe these enjoyed that program, also, for there was a superior elegance about It all, such "delicate shadings," wonderful climaxes, cli-maxes, aqd such thoroughly enjoyable harmony and well-defined melody occasionally oc-casionally that even a Ilottentot must have become enthused. Those others who are supposed to grasp the full significance sig-nificance of the changing rythms, themes, counter themes, the building of climaxes, the phrasing, and thus read the unfolding of some -great heart-sorrow, or somo 'romantic love story these-thought the program divine. di-vine. Perhaps, wo too, may reach a stato of "cultuah" some day that will give us the Insido track and then wo can write our imagination at greater length, but until then accept the assurance as-surance that the A. O. String Quartette Quar-tette concerts can bo wondrously en-Joyed en-Joyed (ev,en If not appreciated understanding) under-standing) by even tho ordinary. individual. indi-vidual. And don't forget that there Is a real, tangible difference between tho muslo of masters and tho soft, popular ragtime stuph by the Shin-plasters Shin-plasters of today. This difference In favor of the classical Is what the A. C. String Quartette is trying to teach and that the artists composing this organization aro capable of presenting the classical to the best advantage can not be doubted. One may go far and hear much classical muslo and find no better artists than Messrs. Thatcher and Splcker, Mrs. Llnnartz and Miss Phylls Thatcher. Going back to the program three vocal solos by Mrs. Llnnartz were highly appreciated. Mrs. Llnnartz has a very pleasing voice that In the past two years has shown remarkable development. The next concert will be given In March, and It Is to bo hoped that the Pavilion will bo filled at tho next ap-pearaucc. ap-pearaucc. Tho Quartette's effort merits mer-its this consideration and tho pleasure of tho evening will warrant it. |
