Show OUT FOR CONSOLIDATION Active Efforts Now Being Made to Secure Consolidation Consol-idation of School Districts of Cache County. Work to secure consolidation of tho various school districts of Cache county coun-ty is now on in earnest, Superintendent Superintend-ent McCarrcy being abroad in the land with petitions urging the County Commissioners to make one school district dis-trict of tho many. Thore Is no little sentiment favorablo to this Idea and Superintendent McCarrcy hopes to present to the Commissioners at their March meeting a number of petitions signed by a large number of tho progressive pro-gressive and influential men of the county. It is said that the County Commissioners are already converted to the advisability of consolidation, but being servants of tho peoploxle,-slro peoploxle,-slro favorablo opinion of them before taking a step that will mark such a radical departure. When asked to define the beneficial results of consolidation, consoli-dation, Superintendent McCarrey said in substance: 1. It will Insure an equitable distribution distri-bution of money spent-for 'education In tho county. 2. It will Insure a moro thoroughly organized school system and enablo us to securo good results Impossible now. 3. Based on tho per centago obtained in Salt Lake county, It will Increase our attendanco fully 800. 4. It will save $1,000 In trustees' salary sal-ary alone, and reduce the number of trustcos to a live, working force. 5. It will enable us to manage the schools much more economically while securing better results, Under consolidation con-solidation wo can carry on tho schools advantageously with a six-mill levy, 0. An equltablo assessment can be made, much unasscssed property will bo restored to tho rolls, and Impovcr-ished Impovcr-ished schools will receive their due while the extremely fortunate ones to date will receive"" a no less perfect service. ' ' , 7. We can place selection of teachers on a professional basis, securo better supervisors and instructors In muslo and raise tho standard all along the line. It Is Impossible to progress much under present conditions. Mr. McCarrey enumerated countless other small but essential advantages to bo gained by consolidation and cited tho fact that twenty-two states of tho Union havo adopted tjils polloy, whllo many counties in most of the states have consolidated their school districts dis-tricts Into one In Utah, Salt Lake, Weber and llox Elder counties have already proted consolidation to be a thoiough success. What Consolidation Means. Consolidation would mean that all present trustees would be dispensed with, and five would be named by tho Commissioners, these five to hold office until next December, when their successors suc-cessors would be elected by the people. These live would elect a county superintendent super-intendent and each would have one-fifth one-fifth of the county to look after at a salary of 1300 a year. It would mean that six men would have control of tho school sj stem of the county, and no sane man will deny that six can do this work far better than seventy can do it. It would uieuu Hut lax for school purposes would be divided equitably, equit-ably, and just how great Injustice there Is under present arrangement Is demonstrated In the following table giving the districts, number' of pupils In each district and the amount of property per caulta In each district that may bo assessed: Name of School Yalua- Am'tpcr District rop'tlon Hon capita Paradise.... 237 $105,210 $823 05 nyrum.... 032 410,701 050 35 Mlllvlllc.... 202 184,804 015 30 Providence. . 409 489,520 1,107 00 Mt. For Instance, In ten years College was assessrd 30 mills, while Ilyde Park was assessed 82 mills In that tlmo and Covo 00 mills, etc. Uyium Is up against It and Petersborobccauso of tho railroad, rail-road, revels In luxury; Providence and Lewlston, on account of tho sugar factories, fac-tories, have wondrous advantages whllo other districts staivc. Consolidation Consoli-dation would distribute the burden. of education equally. It Is to bo hoped the public will seo tho advantages of, consolidation and not longer stand in tho way of this progressive movo. 0 WJL . ASto 2id |
