Show H OGDEN IS WICKED. M "The Christian," that splendid play H presented so acceptably in Logan a H week or more ago, was also presented H at Ogdcn. There, as here, the opera H house was not crowded to its capa- H city. Beore "The Christian" came H . to Ogden the State Journal had castl- H gated the opera house people for pre- H ' sentlng vaudeville, cheap melodramas, H N light comedies, and such like, saying-' M t the people of that city ically preferred H something better. Following the per- H foimance of "The Christian" the H State Journal apologized. That apol- H o,jy contains much that will lit here, M is readable, and Is presented here The H editor s.i)s: M Some da ago the Journal Indulged fl in a few remarks ancnt the class or M , entertainments provided by the man- fl agement that has charge of the book- m In,' at the Orand Opera House. Said M i remarks were of a somewhat sarcastic M I Weapologi1 M Said apology la tendered In the most M object manner. We desire to be tin- M' ) dcrstood as being essentially humble. 1 1 So humble in fact that our position M ' cannot be well described In words. H j I The mind is Incapable of dictating to H f the lingers the work of placing on Hf ! paper the piomptlngs of the heart. H' ti j Why do we apologize? Iiccausc wo H' J erred. We have misunderstood the H ' tompcr of the people here. That Is H to say, thu threatrcgolng people. H Last night "The Christian" was H put on by an excellent company. It H ' was composed of artists; was well H balanced and entirely competent. H The play itself Is one of those excep- H tions which, reproduced on the stage, H ' uplift and ennoble. It was clean, It H was beautiful, It was exalting, it was H ' something calculated to make those H who listened better men and better R: women. M However, this Is not intended as a H criticism of the play Itself, or of the Hv;. work of the. talented ladies and uent- Hn ! lemMn prodtichib' It. Rather Jel ti bo H i those who did not attend It. |
