SUSC Observatory receives additional 14" telescope The addition of a 14-inch telescope to the Southern Utah State College observatory will bring more of the heavens into view for area star gazers. Given to SUSC by an anonymous donor, the telescope doubles resolution and triples light gathering powers previously available through observatory equipment. , "With the new telescope observers ob-servers can, see more detail in planetary surfaces and dimmer objects such as nebulas and galaxies," Merrill R. Jones, chairman of the department of physical science, said. Dr. Jones said the telescope is a new one costing about $4,500. Other equipment in the SUSC observatory includes two eight- ' inch Newtonian reflectors and a three-inch refractor. i Dr. Jones noted that the observatory ob-servatory is open to the public, weather permitting, Saturdays i from 8-10 p.m. Mountain Stan- I dardTime and from 9:30 to 11:30 p.m. Daylight Saving Time. "At the present time Jupiter and Saturn offer very interesting viewing," Dr. Jones said. Arrangements for special astronomy lectures and ob- serving sessions can be made by contacting the SUSC Department r of Physical Science. "We gear the lectures to the age and in- terests of the group," Dr. Jones j said. jjf |
