The victory gave the two teams a split over the regular season and forced, for the second consecutive con-secutive year, a third confrontation con-frontation -- a rubber match - to determine the Region XI championship. Winner of the third game will win an automatic berth in the State 3A tournament with the loser forced to playoff with the seventh place team from Region Six to win entry into the state classic. It's a good way to end the Region XI -- a newly formed region to accomodate the move of Cedar and Dixie into the 3A rank -- as a realighment for the 1977-78 season will put the two southern Utah schools into another Region with additional competition next year. So the big game is on. Both schools won on their home courts forcing the playoff for the final Region XI basketball championship. cham-pionship. But it was a battle -- one that could have gone either way - It was a battle of changing momentum with the Redmen taking the early initiative the Flyers coming on strong in the third period and the Redmen coming back to win the battle going away in the overtime period. Coach Dick Hobb's Redmen controlled the first half of play from the opening tip. It was taken by surprise starter Kirk Smith who took it for a lay-up, was fouled and converted the extra point for a three point play and a three point lead. On buckets by Scott Reber and Jimmy Cannon the Flyers held a brief 4-3, but aside from that the Redmen dominated the first half leading 11-6 at the quarter mark and by four at halftime with a low scoring 27-23 advantage. The Redmen failed to convert a fieldgoal in the third period and hit only four of seven from the charity line. Dixie made up the four point disadvantage with 2:50 left in the period on a five foot jumper by Cannon to knot the score at 31-all and Gary Allred put the Flyers out in front by two with a fieldgoal with 2:14 on the clock. Reber converted a three point play and Cannon hit from the field to give the charging Flyers a seven point advantage at the end of the third period 38-31.
