Show COMMENTS Leaving Parowan this week end for what they feel are greener pastures, will be Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Caldwell and family. They leave us to make a home in Duchesne, where Lowell will become principal of the high school, which is slightly smaller than ours, but a step up for him and we hope a good life for his family. fam-ily. In leaving the Caldwells bring an end to 12 years of fine service to our community communi-ty (they came here in 1958), with Lowell to be an assistant assist-ant to Coach John Wood. He became coach of all activities in 1963, and the next year became be-came football, wrestling, track and tennis coach and did a good job considering the competition. com-petition. But the sport we especially es-pecially thank him for promoting pro-moting was wrestling, which he introduced in I960. Why wrestling? because it filled the winter activity gap for almost 40 boys, who just couldn't make basketball. In ! his third year at PHS his team got 3rd in division, 12th j in state; in 1967, third in di- t vision, 8th in state; 1968, 3rd I in division, 7th in state, 1969, 1 2nd in division, 5th in state, j and in 1970, second in division and 4th in state.. This with ( no Class A and B division. I Although third was his high- est finish in football the hierli i school fielded representative teams much of the time and were always up in tennis. f j When they came to Parowan we didn't have a swimming 1 pool, but Mrs. Caldwell took over the job of water safety instructor, taking bus loads of ; children to the Cedar City pool until we got one here. Shi? became manager of the local pool when it was built, man- f aged it for three years and has always been an instructor theie. And the job she has done is attested to over the years by going to the pool and watching the small fry take off like mermaids in the water show. Now we will admit ad-mit that she had lots of help in the program, but she was always a leader in it. Lowell also led the Third Ward to a peak in the scouting scout-ing program, and both he and his wife were active at all time in LDS Church auxiliaries, aux-iliaries, j Both were active in church I and civic activities, but Low- f ell said let's not make this sound any more like an obit- t uary than we have to, so we J will summarize by saying they have been good citizens, hard workers, and we will miss them, and Duchesne will gain i when they get there. We wonder if we are going to see a trend away from the "long hair", that is among the students in the local high school. After a week or so of f conditioning work, for the pro- J spective members of the PHS $ football team, Coach Larson informed the boys if they ex- pected to get a football suit they had better get their hair cut. The boys took him at his word and appeared the next week without their long tresses. tres-ses. We understand that one of the boys had to visit the barber twice, to please the coach. Also those who were in charge of the American Legion Leg-ion Baseball tournament last week, got that meet under way by telling the players that long hair was taboo, and if they wanted to play in the meet to make a trip to the barber shop. And almost to a player the boys went along, with a few exceptions, and we understand the exceptions did not get to play. |
