Show Station at Cedar dates back to 1947 The coming weeic as rjeen set aside on a national basis to celebrate the 50th anniversary anniver-sary of the Federal Aviation Administration Flight Service Station operations in the United Un-ited States. The history of the Flight Service Station in this area dates back only 40 years to 1930 when such a station was located at Enterprise immediately immed-iately under the airway system- In 1947 with advanced technology tech-nology it was found that the station could be moved from the airways and handle inflight in-flight operation as well as conduct traffic work at an established station. It was in that year that the facility moved to the Cedar City Municipal Mun-icipal Airport. Originally the FAA Flight Service Station operated out, of an old house located at the airport. In 1950 the facility i moved to the Cedar City Air-1 port Administration building: where it is currently housed. According to R. J. Christiansen, Christian-sen, facility chief, the operation opera-tion has shown a continued growth each year with the increased use of airplanes. He estimates that the yearly increase in-crease in activity jumps anywhere any-where from 10 to 25 percent. To give residents an idea of the extent of the operation Christiansen pointed out that during the week of July 26 to August 1 there were a total of 389 aircraft operations at the Cedar City Airport. Tihs includes take-offs and landings land-ings and does not include instruction in-struction and assistance given giv-en to overflight aircraft. During the summer months Christiansen estimates that the station makes 75 to 100 contacts which include those enroute and those taking off or landing. In addition preflight pre-flight and in-flight briefing of pilots on weather conditions, condi-tions, winds aloft, condition of navagational aids, etc. are given. The Cedar City Flight Service Ser-vice Station located here serve all the airports in the south western portion of Utah and south Eastern Nevada. In order that residents may have an opportunity to see the station in operation a special open house will be held Thursday, Aug. 20 from 8 a-m. to 5 p.m. Anyone interested in-terested is invited to attend. |
