Show American Legion Auxiliary Annual Poppy Day Saturday, Volunteers to Visit All Homes Saturday, May 25 is American Legioii Poppy Day. Volunteers will be calling at homes In Cedar City to sell small crepe paper popples In memory of the war dead and the disabled veteran. The popy program begins each year In the summer or fall when disabled veterans start making the flowers In government hospitals hospi-tals and special convalescent workshops maintained by the American Legion Auxiliary. In the following months these men are given profitable employment shaping the red memorial flow-ers.. flow-ers.. Manufacturing popies aids the veteran both financially and psychologically. They are paid for the work they do regardless of any government compensation they might be receiving, and the job itself Is a relief from long hours spent in a hospital ward. Poppy materials are supplied by the American Legion Auxiliary Auxil-iary and the organization pays these men weekly throughout the manufacturing period. Distribution Distribu-tion of the poppies Is handled en tirely by volunteer workers serving serv-ing without pay. Every penny received from the program goes directly for aid to disabled veterans veter-ans or members of their families. Most poppy funds remain In the communities in which they are raised, being spent by local Legion Le-gion and Auxiliary Posts for community com-munity relief work. A smaller percentage of the funds goes to the Departments and National organizations for use In rehabilitation rehabili-tation and child welfare projects. Traditionally, there has never been any price fixed to the poppy. Donations of any amount are acceptable, ac-ceptable, because the basic purpose pur-pose of Poppy Day is to offer the American public an opportunity to honor tne war dead and assist as-sist the living. Last year's grand totals for the Poppy Program were: $300,000 paid to 7,062 Veterans for Poppies, Pop-pies, $1,380,000 receipts from Pop-py Pop-py sales which supplied the money mon-ey to help 3,965 children and 2,500 families. By "Wuring a Poppy" on Pop- py Day each American can honor the sacrifice made by our servicemen ser-vicemen while assisting the living. liv-ing. WEAR A POPPT ON SATURDAY. SATUR-DAY. MAY 25th. |
