Show I Care oi Shade Trees Important in Cedar City Beautification by Albert AlberUoo Member, City Beautification Committee Cedar City has many beautiful beauti-ful shade trees, some of which could be made more beautiful by a little attention and care. Many of the shade trees in Cedar Ce-dar City, growing along the streets between the sidewalk and the curb have low branches that should be pruned off. These low branches or limbs brush pedestrians pedes-trians in the face as they walk along the sidewalks and they in-terfer in-terfer with city equipment working work-ing the streets for snow removal remov-al and grading. I i A tree grows from the top, adding add-ing a new round of branches each year until it has reached its ceiling. As new rounds of branches are added to the top of the tree the lower rounds should be removed, particularly from shade trees, until a height of about seven feet above the ground is reached. If this is done before these lower limbs get too large the spot from where the branch is removed 'leals over quickly and the trur.k of the tree takes on a straight, smooth form with no damage to the growth of the tree. Cedar City also has quite a number of trees both along the streets and back in the lots that have numerous dead limbs that are of no value to the tree and are very unsightly. These should be removed to Improve the beauty beau-ty of our city and the value of the owner's property. Fall and winter is a good time to do this work. Take a look at your trees and see if some pruning would help their looks and add to their utility util-ity in providing pleasant shade. If the Cedar City Beautification Beautifica-tion Committee can be helpful in giving you advice please feel free to call our chairman, Mrs. lone Bolander and she will refer re-fer you to where advice can be had without charge. |
