Show Broncos Split Fifth Double Header In Season's Contests College of Southern Utah Bronco Bron-co baseball team remained one game behind the Dixie Rebels of St. George after spliting a double-header double-header at St. George Saturday afternoon. af-ternoon. It was the fifth series of double-headers for the two clubs and the CSU Broncos have split all five of the series, winning one and losing one. In the opener Saturday the Broncos almost broke the split game Jinx but a three-run homer hom-er by Markovich of Dixie in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Rebels a 10 to 8 margin. In the second game Larry Smith pitched a three hitter against the Rebels to lead the Broncos to an 8 to 2 victory. The Broncos led throughout most of the first game, getting off to a good start with Gary Shumway, leadoff man, blasting a home run as the first man at the plate for the day. CSU added a second tally In the second with a single by Jeff Marchant and another single by pitcher Al Bland, to score Marchant. Mar-chant. Dixie pushed in three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. The Broncos picked up five tallies in the fourth and Tiivie came with three for a score of 7 to 6 for the Broncos. In the sixth Markovich homered to tie jthe score and in the top of the seventh the Broncos pushed in a tally with Eric Gardner singling and Scott doubling to score him, for an 8 to 7 lead. Two men were out and Markovich Mark-ovich had two strikes on him when he blasted his second home j run of the game to give the win to the Rebels in the bottom half of the final inning. Winning pitcher was Pherson of Dixie with Bland of CSU taking tak-ing the loss. Larry Smith's hurling In the second contest was all the Broncos Bron-cos needed as they Lroezed to an 8 to 2 win. CSU picked up 12 hits off Wilson, the loser, including a home run and double by Marchant Mar-chant and a triple by Shumway, in the extra-base department. Game was really put on ice in the sixth inning with six hits producing four tallies. Shumway tripled to open the inning, scoring scor-ing on a single by Cleave. Scott then singled to set up Marchant for his three run homer. |
