Janson today appealed to the residents; of Cedar City to help reduce tlioj hazards of slips and falls for; letter carriers and other postal j personnel who call at their homes. Mr. Janson emphasized that the Post Office Department is not alone in facing a problem j of employee Injuries from siipt j and falls and said he hopes al-' so that his appeal will be of as- j sistance to employees of delivery and service agencies utilities, dairies, grocery stores, cleaners, department stores and the like. The local postmaster noted that Washington Post Office De-partment De-partment headquarters had recently re-cently reemphasized the problem of slip and fall hazards for the random check of 281 accidents selected for analysis, it was found that a total of 209 occurred occur-red on icy walks, steps or stairways stair-ways of postal patrons. The acting postmaster general reports that injuries to postal personnel accounted for a total cost of $5,506,928 during a recent re-cent 12-month period. He indicated indi-cated that a very large part cf this total annual medical and Injury compensation cost to the Government was owing to slip and fall Injuries on the job. In his appeal the local postmaster post-master warned that the period of greatest hazard from falls and slips in this community is January, February and March. Postal patrons of this area may help cut down on such accidents through use of timely precautions. precau-tions.
