Show Cedar City Taxpayers Cast Votes In Favor of Hotel Property Purchase Taxpayers of Cedar City, voting vot-ing on a general obligation bond issue Tuesday, gave the City Administration Ad-ministration a vote of confidence in the question of purchasing the El Escalanie Hotel property to protect the interests of the com-, com-, munity and provide valuable ; oorperty for future city expan-1 expan-1 sion. A total of 1580 votes were cast on the issue, 996 In favor of Issuing Is-suing $110,000 general obligation bonds for the purchase of the hotel property, and 584 votes A'ere cast against the proposal. The favorable sentiment seemed to be rather general throughout the city, since a favorable vote was cast in all but three of the 14 voting districts. District No. 4 opposed the bond Issue, 31 to 22; District No. 10, voted 58 to 51 against the issue, and District No. 12 divided its votes equally, 39 for and 39 against . The city had taken an option on the property several months ago, when the Union Paclflc Railroad Company offered the property for sale for $110,000, generally conceded to be a very favorable price, regardless of the use to which the property may be put. Discussion Developed Considerable discussion of the proposal for city purchase of the property had developed since, but there seemed to be no concrete con-crete sentiment for or against the proposal until a public hearing was called a few weeks ago. At this meeting It appeared that most people were anious to have the city acquire the property, or at least anious that the propery j be retained particularly for civic center uses. Following this hearing hear-ing the administration decided to call the bond election to determine de-termine the wishes of the people peo-ple generally and also to provide pro-vide financing If the citizenry favored the purchase. No plans for use of the building build-ing have been formulated, but the city council will begin a study of the matter immediately to determine he most feasible use. It may be leased for operation opera-tion as a hotel and cafe as In the past, or a portion of the structure struc-ture mav bo leased for this purpose pur-pose and the balance devoted to other uses. These may Include needed office space for the city administration, or space may be leased to organizations needing such snaee. Gets Voter Approval However, the voters approved only the purchase of the building, build-ing, and the Mayor and city council must now roach decisions on use of the structure and the land on the corner of 100 West and Center Streets which will be Included In the purchase. |
