Show Leo Larson Receives Write-in Majority On School Board Post Leo Larson, president of the Board of Education of the Iron County School District, was re-1 elected to the board for another i three-year term, when vot'-rs : i i from District No. 5, gave him a j wide marjority of votes in a most i unusual write-in contest. i District No. 5 of the School District, Dis-trict, includes that portion of Cedar Ce-dar City West of Main Street and North of Center Street. Larson received re-ceived 407 votes as compared to 107 cast for Jay Overson, Hi for Gail Scogmillcr, and ten votes divided between two other resi-dents resi-dents of the area. i , The election was strictly a write-in affair since no candidate had filed for election to the posi-; tion when the dealine date pass- j ed. Mr. Larson had intended to seek re-election, we understand,! but since no other candidate had filed for the position, he did not file, working on the assumption that if no candidate filed In opposition op-position he would retain the position. po-sition. This was based on Interpretations Inter-pretations of the law that "an officer shall hold his position un. til his succesor Is elected and qualified." One other member of the board is currently serving as the result of just such action two years ago, when no one filed for the position, posi-tion, no election was held and the incumbent continued to serve. However, the State Attorney Attor-ney General ruled against this in-terprctation in-terprctation this year, maintaining maintain-ing that a board member could not serve unless an election was held. The ruling was made only a few days before the election and since the deadline for filing had passed there could be no candidates listed on the ballot. Consequently the only alternative alterna-tive was a wTlte-ln election. Results of the write-in Indlcat. ed that the people of District No 5 are well satisfied with the services ser-vices of Mr. Larson on the board Voters In the district however have expressed the opinion that had the eleclon proceded normal ly there would have been prac tlcally no write-In for the post I tlon. |
