Show Second Straight Championship Thunderbirds Win ICAC Baseball Title with Double Win Over Boise The College of Southern Utah Thunderbirds successfully defended de-fended their Intermountain Collegiate Col-legiate Athletic Conference baseball base-ball crown Saturday when they defeated the Bosie Broncos of Boise, Ida. by scores of 7 to 3 and 2 to 1. The two teams battled it out in a high wind in a repeat of the ICAC playoff series held at Boise Boi-se last season. As a matter of fact the same two T-Bird pitchers who were credited with the 1962 playoff series wins, came back this year to take the victories and send the CSU crew into tl.e national playoffs of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Cal Hair, a strong right han-der, han-der, went to the mound in the first contest to pick up the victory, vic-tory, and left hander Steve Ca-hoon Ca-hoon picked up the win in the final game. Hair threw for six innings with Kent Smith coming com-ing on. In the seventh Inning of the seven inning game to finish out 1 Hits were identical for th T-Birds T-Birds in both contests. T T-Birds T-Birds garnered tlx hits, including a three run homer by Reed Backus Back-us and a two run round tripper by Ray Greenberg to push in seven se-ven runs in the first game. They came back with six hits in the second game including a double by John Paez. Boise collected four hits in the first game and had five in the second. i Charged with the losses were Bill Peterson of the Broncos in the first contest and Dan Keller was the loser in the second. Both men went the distance The CSU chuckers turned in top performances with Hair credited cred-ited with nine strikeouts and Ca-hoon Ca-hoon in his seven stint had a total of 11. Reed Backus started the scoring scor-ing in the first game when he lifted a. home run over the left field fence with two men on board. John Yates, was on sec-1 ond after being hit with a pitched pitch-ed ball and Gordon Loveless was on first with a single. I In the top of the fifth the T-Birds T-Birds pushed in four runs on three hits to put the game on ice. Yates again was the first man on base with a walk. He scored on a tririe by John Paez. Loveless again singled to drive in Paez. With Loveless on base: Ray Greenberg, homered to end the scoring. In the bottom of the fifth the Broncos scored one, Chen came ba.fc with two runs on two hits in the top of the sixth, but it was not enough. In the second game it was the Broncos who scored first and it looked like that run might hold up as the game progressed. In the top of the fourth frame Hudson Hud-son of the visitors tripled with an opposite field, hit to right That was followed by another opposite field hit by Matlock scoring Hudson. Matlock was, however, thrown out at third base when he tried to stretch it fori more than two. Not until the sixth did the T Birds get into the scoring co-i lumn. Backus led off the inning with ' a single then advanced to third on a single by Greenberg. With no one away, son Suaouiy sacrificed sacri-ficed to score Backus and Greenberg Green-berg moved to aci-oitu. With Yocum at the plate, Kel-iri, Kel-iri, on the ."luund ior Boise, threw wide. The catcher moved out to block the pitch then attempted at-tempted to throw Greenberg out as he moved to third. A wild throw allowed Greenberg to come in to score what proved to be the winning run.
