Show H. S. Graduates Show Well At College Level Cedar City High School graduates grad-uates attending college compare well scholastically with other college students, according to Information In-formation released this week by Pratt M. Bothers, principaL Following fall quarter, colleges col-leges send to high school principals prin-cipals reports of students attending attend-ing college as freshmen. This service Is offered so that schools may assist students in improving scholarship. The grade point average av-erage of each high school U compared com-pared with the total grue point average of the entire freshman, class. University of Utah Indicates; that the grade point average for freshmen and sophomore students stu-dents was 2.189 for the 1959 fall quarter. The grade point average of Cedar City High School students stu-dents at the University was 2.418, according to Information sent from the University of Utah office of-fice of the registrar. At Brlgham Young University Cedar City freshmen students had a grade point average of 2.886. The high school did not receive the grade point average for the entire freshman class so that no comparison can be made; however they can be compared with other universities. Utah State Un'verslty reports that the grade point average of I. 307 freshmen student was 2.- 298. Two Cedar City High School freshmen students had an aver age of 2.427, however, a third student who did not complete the quarter In all subjects and received credit in only five hours, brought the average of the three down to 1.907. College of Southern Utah will soon have this service available to high schools, but fall quarter grade point averages are not available except for those students stu-dents who made the honor roll. During the fall quarter there were 118 Cedar City High School graduates In the freshman and sophomore clauses at College of Southern Utah. There was a total to-tal of 630 students registered in the two classes. Cedar City High School graduates made up 18.7 per cent of the total registration in the two classes. This included 72 freshmen. 38 of whom were women and 34 men. In the sophomore soph-omore class there were 46, 25 men and 21 women. There were 364 freshmen and 266 sophomores sopho-mores at CSU. Cedar City Hiph School graduates made up 20 of the freshman class and 179c, i of the sophomore class. The total number of CSU students stu-dents on the honor roll was 51. rMnr ClMr IIIh Srhnol graduates gradu-ates on the honpr roll numbered 22, or 41 of the total. There were 19 stulents who received a grade point averace of 4.00, or straight A, of .this number 10 were graduates of Cedar City j High School. This made 53 of the straight A honor roll being graduates of Cedar City High School, compared to 47 for all other students. The only student. who Is attending at-tending an out-of-state university univer-sity the first two years of college, col-lege, that we have a record of, has made the Dean's honor roll each semester during the . past two years. We had one student last year who took a competitive scholarship schol-arship examination in business with 53 students from Utah, Idaho Ida-ho and Nevada. This student received re-ceived the fifth highest score, being be-ing surpassed by only one Utah student We have one student who won oft as a finalist in the National Mcrk Scholarship contest given to 550,000 students in the United States. This student took two classes of colleee mathematics at CSU during the fall quarter and received A In both classes. We also had a second student who received honorable mention in the National Merit Scholarship contest |
