Show Cedar Ciiy Selected As Site Of American Legion State Basketball Tourney The American Legion State Bas-ke.ball Bas-ke.ball Tournament will be held in Cedar City on February 27, and 28th and March 1st, with eight teams fiom all parts of Utah participating. participat-ing. The tournament was awarded to Cedar City Monday night, when the ba.ketball committee of the Drpar.ment of the American Legion Le-gion met In Provo to consider bids fram a number of cities. The local bid was made by Frank Dalley, Commander of the Cedar City American Legion Post, who was supported by representatives of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce, Com-merce, Rotary and Lions clubs. The tournament will be conducted by the Cedar Post of the American Legion, with all local civic clubs backing the eterans organisation In the undertaking. under-taking. The tourney will be held In the Branch Agricultural college gymnasium, gym-nasium, with four games scheduled each of the first two nights and two games on the final night of the meet, at which a state champion of the newly organized American Legion League will be determined. In addition to the state title the teams will be fighting for the hon. ir of representing Utah In the National Na-tional AAU Tournament to be held in Denver in March. League schedules in eight dis- -trlcts of the state are now being run-off to determine the entrants in the Cedar City tournament, and unusually fast teams are being developed, indicating that the type of play and competition at the meet to be held here will compare favorably fav-orably with any held in the entire country. At the present time the Cedar City Legion team Is leading ' the local district race and has a good chance of becoming an entry in the State Tournament. In bidding for the tourney, the local clubs made definite financial guarantees to the State Department, Depart-ment, and the Leglonalres will need the full support of the entire city In order to make the meet a success and prove that southern Utah, with Cedar City as a center, is entitled to more of the big events of the state, rather than concentrating all activities in the Salt Lake City area. |
