Show B.A.C. Opera is Warmly Received The presentation last week of Giuseppe Verdi's grand opera, "La Traviata", by the Branch Agricultural Ag-ricultural college music department depart-ment proved to be a splendid achievement by the cast and orchestra, or-chestra, a-thrilling experience for all who attended, and another brilliant triumph for Prof. William Wil-liam II. Manning, director. The opera was presented five times during the week, first for the high school students, then for the college student body, followed fol-lowed by three performances for the general public. In every instance in-stance the performance was enthusiastically en-thusiastically received, and was generally acclaimed as perhaps the most professional performance perform-ance yet presented at the college. Emma Lou Warren, who sang the leading role of "Vlolrtta Val-lfry", Val-lfry", gave outstanding performances perform-ances in each of the five presentations. presen-tations. Students of music who heard the opera were high In their praise of her performances, both in voice and acting. The other two principal leads of the opera, the father and the bon, George and Alfred Germont, and sung by Benard Qulnn and Wallace Adams, respectively, also al-so did outstanding work and were recipients of equal praise with Miss Waren. Two understudies, Dan Speak-man Speak-man and Martin Cox, sang the latter two roles for the school presentations, and gave excellent performances, and promises of rapid development In future musical mus-ical undertakings at the college. The entire cast, including the minor roles carried by Leonora Spencer, Neva Ashby, Robert H. Cook, LeRay McAllister, Reed Richards, Reld Hunter, Rondo Manwaring and James Bishop, and the chorus gave performances performanc-es that ably supported and main talned the quality of the entire performance. Contributing greatly to the excellence ex-cellence of the performances was the accompaniment by the col lege orchestra under the direction of Professor Roy L. Halvcrsen. |
