Show Parowan Civic, Church Leader Succumbs Alvin Benson, 82, prominent ani well known civic and church leader lead-er of Parowan, died at the Iron County Hospital Tuesday, following a long illness. Funeral services will be held in Parowan Friday at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Benson served as chaplain of the state legislature in 1927. He served serv-ed as sheriff before Utah was admitted ad-mitted to the Union, and became Iron County's first sheriff after Utah had received statehood. He served as mayor of Parowan and as a member of the city council. He was born November 17, 1859, at Parowan, a son of Richard and Phoebe Forrester Benson. He married mar-ried Elizabeth Ellen Orton in tlu St. George Temple November 1G, 1831. Mrs. Benson died in May, 1941. He has lived in Parowan his entire life, where he has engaged in livestock raising and farming. He was an active act-ive church worker and filled a mission mis-sion to California in 1897-98. He is survived by two sons, Alvin A. Benson of Los Angeles, and Clifford Clif-ford H. Benson of Toppenish, Wash. Four daughters, Mrs. Deane B. T.nkler, of Altadcna, Calif.; Mrs. Flossie F. Ramsey, Bingham; Mrs. Jane B. Mitchell and Roberta B. Rowley of Parowan. |
