Show Is Canteen A Fad? Young p.ople of Cedar City, who have been working for the past six months to have a Teen-Age Canteen Can-teen established here because they maintain that their Is nothing in th way of recreation provided for them, seem Just a little inconsistent when their record of participation in activities that are provided. Ar example of this was the poor attendance at-tendance at the M. I. A. dance arranged especially for them Tuesday Tues-day evening. Because the the young people had repettedly complained that no dances are provided for them especially during the summer months, steps were taken to provide pro-vide a weekly dance, particularly for the teen-age group, but when the first one was held Tuesday night very f.w of the young people attended, at-tended, so few in fact that expenses ex-penses could not be met. And this right at a time when the young people are Insisting that a canteen be opened for them at 1-ast three nights a week. Do they really want recreation, or is the conteen idea a passing fancy, that after the novelty wears away, will fall to hold their Interest Inter-est and draw their support, as so many other activities have done If so there is no Justification for the city to spend money for rents, etc., or for civic groups to make contributions for equipment or supplies. If they are really sincere in their expressed desires for a good wholesomo recreation program, and for a place where they can meet regularly for an hour or so of good clean fun, It is up to them to prove that sincerity by supporting the move wholeheartedly, and supporting support-ing other recreation activities provided pro-vided for them. If It is Just a passing pass-ing whim or fancy, the efforts needed need-ed to get the canteen started will be wasted. |
