Show v DR. MIDDLETON DOES HIP BONE DOWEL SPLICE HERE Last Monday at the local hospital, assisted by Drs. Macfarlane and Berp-trom, Berp-trom, Dr. Geo. W. Middleton, the well-known surgeon from the L. D. S. hospital at Salt Lake, performed what is known as the bone-splint operation for the cure of lameness in Miss Oral Harris, which resulted from a fractured fract-ured hip sustained several months ago, which left the girl a hopeless cripple except by the performing of this operation op-eration which is comparatively new to urgery. The operation consists of the removal re-moval of a piece, of bone about six inches long from the shin of the patient. pa-tient. A dowel is made of this and driven into a hole bored through the outer and into the inner section of the hip bone forming the ball portion of the ball and socket joint fastening them together until they grow strong again. Without this operation it is an impossibility to set the bones of the hip so that a satisfactory union is formed, and the patient invariably remains lame. Dr. Middleton has performed this operation a number of times in the north, and apparently the one on Miss e Harris was successful, with every probability that the patient will recover re-cover her wonted strength and symmetry sym-metry of movements. |
