Last Monday at high noon, according accord-ing to schedule, the new city administration admin-istration met at the Library auditorium auditor-ium in connection with the retiring officials and listened to Mayor Corry's valedictory, during the course of which he briefly recited the accomplishments, aims and purposes of his administration, administra-tion, explaining tre status of the new water system in course of construction, construc-tion, the steps which had been taken in the direction of town planning and other unfinished business. In closing clos-ing he wished the new mayor and council every success and asked them to feel free at any and all times to call upon him or any of his official family for information as to anything done or in course of execution by the outgoing administration. Mayor Cor-ry Cor-ry expressed his abiding faith in the future of Cedar City, which he believed be-lieved to be the best and most talked of mall city in the state. Status of the Water System. Mayor Corry, aided by information supplied by City Engineer Gardner, advised the new administration with the present status of the city water system in course of re-constructlon. Read a list of the streets on which the new pipe and fittings had been laid, and those remaining to be replaced re-placed and stated that the work of reconstruction was just about half completed. That there had been a serious delay in the construction of the system, due to labor troubles that had seriously interfered with the delivery de-livery of materials by the manufacturers manufac-turers and railroads; but stated that the materials were now all on hand with the exception of a small shipment still remaining at Lund, and that it was all paid for with the exception of one bill of approximately $800. Of the $00,000 for which the city bonded for the improvement of its water system and water supply, there now remains approximately $15,000, which in the opinion of the outgoing mayor, would be well spent by the time the water system is completed. This without the increase of the supply sup-ply of water in the city mains. But Mr. Corry stated that by exploning in the Right-hand canyon a spring of 200 gallons per minute capacity had been located which could be brought into the system with the use of wooden pipe from the latterals about the city which are being replaced with steel pipe. In connection with the new water system sufficient uniform fire hydrants are being installed about town to insure in-sure protectinon against fire, when supplemented by lire hose and cart, and some suitable fire-fighting organization. organ-ization. Town Planning Important. Mayor Corry regarded town planning plan-ning of much importance and explained ex-plained what had been done by his administration in this connection, referring re-ferring to the visit here of Mr. Kessler of national reputation, who has prof-ferres prof-ferres to submit a sketch of the future Cedar City, with suggestions for improvements, im-provements, etc., for the sum of $500. I Also read a communication from a firm of town architects in which they asked ) $1,500 for planning Cedar City and I working out all problems and details connected with our future growth, in ronnection with a city planning com- t mission of local people. Hureau, renuesting immediate action on the matter of a suitable children'? play ground for Cedar City. The text of the petition follows: "Cedar City, Ctah, Dec. 4, Itlf, "To the Honorable Mayor and City Council, Gentlemen: "Wo, the Committee of the Farm Hureau. having been appointed a Playground Play-ground Committee, are following in struct ions by making the following outlined request: "That a city playground be located, equipped and supervised. We suggest the use of the Fast side of the City Pnrk -which in our opinion can be prepared in enrly spring by community commun-ity labor and provided with playground equipment which can be later moved if n city plan makes it r xessary. "The school playgrounds are thot to be inadequate for the people of Cedar City and will probably not be supervised super-vised during the summer. However, we think when the playground movement move-ment is started that two or more wdl be necessary to meet the city's need. We also think that the Square used as playground will improve the appearance ap-pearance and enhance tTio value of the property as well as work a great moral mor-al reform in the community. We, therefore, Honorable Council, urgently petition you that action be taken tonight. to-night. Very urgently requested by Com. ADA W. WEBSTER, GEORGE A. WOOD, ALMA ESPLIN, CHRISTINE CLAYTON. Mayor Corry stated that they did not feel justified in taking action so near the eloBe of their term in office, preferring to refer the matter to the incoming administration. This closing up the business of the session, a motion carried to adjourn. |
