Show GEORGE WASHINGTON FORCE WASIIINCTON, American soldier, statesman, and first president of the United States, was born 180 years ago today. No nan e is dearer to the American people today than that of Washington, and his name will continue to remain re-main a household word and an inspiration to the American homes as long as the government which he helped to establish remains. Notwithstanding this, Washington had many ups and downs during dur-ing his lifetime many serious reverses and many bitter criticisms and opponents. There were several sev-eral critical times in his career when defeat and discredit seemed inevitable, but he possessed the vital qualities which make for success, and he succeeded suc-ceeded in triumphing over obstacles, and his name was written in history, long after his death, per haps, as the greatest American. Today we celebrate his auspicious advent into the world and revere his name. No other can eclipse him or dim the lustre of his glory. He lived and died a true patriot. He was a capable and daring general, an able statesman, and a wise president. While conditions in the world were very different then than they are L-day, L-day, the agencies of death in warfare were crude and primative in comparison with what we haw to face in these times, yet the resources of the country were oven less in comparison, and Wash-' Wash-' Ington had situations quite as difficult to cope with as any that confront generals in the present great war. And he came out with victory perched upon his banners, just as America is bound to do. BOner or later, in the present conflict. (S) |
