Show THE SMALL CHECK NUISANCE southern Utah Jo a great extent, and is especially prevalent among the students, of issuing small checks for a dollar or less, made payable to nelf, cash, or bearer, is a decided, nuisance to the banker and business men, and so far as we are able to aee, are of no advantage whatever to the issuers. There are twa objects in opening open-ing and maintaining a bank account. ac-count. The first is the safekeeping safe-keeping of one's cash, which prevents its being lost or stolen, and tho second is the obtaining of a voucher for payments made. A small check made payable to 3omo specific person or firm, with tho information of what it is paid for entered on the stub of the check, answers as a receipt re-ceipt for tho money, when it is endorsed by the payee, and is clearly the prudent and businesslike business-like method of doing business. But when made payable to bearer bear-er and circulated as silver or currency, cur-rency, the check performs no such function, and it would be far better to withdraw a few dollars at a time from the bank and pay cash instead of these small checks. If this is done protection is afforded to practically prac-tically all one's money just the same, and the business men and bankers are saved tho trouble and annoyance of hardling all these little checks, which must be separately listed by the depositor, de-positor, endorsed, and the responsibility re-sponsibility of their being returned re-turned assumed. The Bank cashier must make a record of them all, Hut them on two or threo different accounts, and go to no end of trouble, all for your accommodation, and the possible use of a small reserve until it is drawn out. This both the business man and banker are quite willing to do, if it is of any real protection or benefit to the drawer, but it is not. Therefore, why not abandon tho practice of writing ho many small checks to "Bear-jer, "Bear-jer, ' and either draw a little (more at a time from your accounts, ac-counts, or make checks poyablo i - ' ' ' to specific persons for specific payments, and have tho benefit of a receipt for tho money withdrawn. |
