Show H Public Stands by Sulzer H l As the struggle over Sulzer's impeachment has H progressed another singular thing has been wit- H nessed. Sulzer, in spite of the damning evidence H against him, and in spite of the appeals of his H friends Mr. Roosevelt among them, has refused H to make any explanation or furnish any reply H whatever except a weak general denial. Not a H paper in New York City has, under the circum- H stances, had the hardihood to stand up for him H and against his impeachment, though nearly every H one of these papers is anti-Tammany. But out- H sije of New York, tho Democratic as well as the H Republican organs, show a very pronounced dis- H position to sympathize with his cause and to de- H nounco his assailants And, what is equally inter- H esting, tho papers in New York City, have been H deluged with letters from their own readers de- H fending Sulzer and criticizing the position of the H - editors. That these editors have been taken by H surprise is evident. The World speaks of "a flood H of letters from its readers" disagreeing vehe- H . rnently with its attitude, and sees in this fact "an H iia mazing reaction into leniency for Sulzer." H ;" It adds: "Because Sulzer's corruption has been H exnosed by crooks instead of by virtuous men, H '.Sulzer bacomes a hero; because Sulzer has been H impeached at the dictation of the Assembly's Boss H instead of at the dictates of the Assembly's con- K science, Sulzer becomes a martyr." The Tribune H notes that it also is in receipt of "-a number of H letters from its readers" finding fault with its H k' attitude toward Governor Sulzer. The Evening I it.un SDeas tfie aame experience. What is H -foore, assemblymen who voted for the impeach- 1 -r-- ment are being punished for their act. In Nassau Nas-sau County, in Herkimer County, in Onondaga, Niagara. Ontario, and elsewhere, Republican as well as Democratic asgcmblymen have been refused re-fused renomination for that reason only. |
