Show B THANKSGIVING m The toil of the summer is over, m the crops have been garnered, B f and it is right and proper now, B I that we should stop for a few H moments and turn over thoughts, B r and render our thanks to the B 4 great giver of every good and B I perfect gift for the bounties we B i ' enjoy and the general prosperity m of the country. We would be B I very indignant should anyono H f accuse us of being ungrateful M " for the favors accorded us; but m I there is a law of nature that de- 1 F crccs, that if a man will not use H a faculty or power, he shall not H i retain it, and the spirit of H 1 thankfulness is not exercised as H I much as it should be. In this ex- B 1 cited and feverish race of life, B r we simply snatch its many bless- B ings without stopping to think of H the source from whence they B came, and we are slowly, but B surely, losing this principle of H , gratitude, and as the general B i prosperity increases, we are I withdrawing more and more in-Bfi4.japgi in-Bfi4.japgi ES3HBPW,lW-5Sfo othc fecon4 xrTV -.il- . nfrronn more selfish, jcaut(nr JlPMBtJie Lord but toward each other: 1 B But lot Thanksgining remind us B I that we should be grateful; and B J gratjtude, like every other hum- H I an principle, comes to us by B cultivation cither from pressure Bj of circumstances or from self- B I imposed discipline. But in these B f prosperous times, fow of us take H the trouble to impose much self H discipline, or to cultivate tho B noblo principle of thankfulness, H but give full rein to all the selfish B instincts of the animal nature, H and es)cclally to the greed for B monoy getting; and out of this H state of affairs grow all the H strifes of tbu home and country; H all tho strikes and convulsions H arising from the contentions be- H ' I tween capital and labor, and all H the anarchy, which attempts to B extort that which is not freely H given, and the only remedy that Bj wo see for this festering stato of H , atVairs is some awful calamity, H . fc which shall wring from us tho iB wL Fj ... fragrance of human sympathy. So, welcome B to Thanksgiving Day, and let us B learn a lesson of gratitude which B shall bring us, instead of a B curse, a blessing from our uni- B versal pros)erity. |
