Show SRFDEFENSEIS il IDENl'S PLEA William Jewell Puts Himself in the j Hands of Sheriff Leigh After Killing SAYS WILSON PULLED PISTOL Drunken Row Ends in Death of Wilson From Charge of Jewell's Shotgun Preliminary hearing is being held today before justice of the peace, Samuel T. Leigh of the case of William Jewell of Modcna, Utah, charged with killing a man named Wilson of the same place. George R. Lund of St. George is defending Jewell and District Attorney Hi 5-gins 5-gins is conducting the case for the state. Wilson was killed by a charge of shot fired by Jewell, who claims to have acted in self-defense. According Ac-cording to the stories of Jewell and his partner, Sattley,Wilson, afted buying a mule from Jewell at Moore's ranch, ten miles north of Modena, became quarlcsome as he was drinking, and provoked a fight with Sattley in which Wilson drew a pistol and tried to use it. Sattley claims to have held Wilson's wrist while the gun was discharged five or six times and finally was dropped. drop-ped. The fight finally took the participants par-ticipants out doors, where Sattley took to his heels and ran. He said he heard Wilson say to Jewell, "I'm going to get you now", and the latter reply, "If you. come another step, I'll kill you." then he heard a shot but kept running for some distance. dis-tance. After the killing, Jewell rode into Modena and got the agent to call Sheriff Trehomc Leigh and tell him of the affair. Sheriff Leigh and Deputy Sheriff Arthur Nelson .went immediately to the scene and found the body of Wilson and the gun said, to have belonged to Wilson Wil-son in about the positions to be expected ex-pected to agree with the story told by Sattley and Jewell. They also found Sattley with the marks of a fight on him. The charge from Jewell's shotgun had taken effect mostly in the breast, though shot was lodged in the victim along the entire length of his trunk.
