Show Old English Labor Customs. In his "History of Coal Mining." R. W. Galloway points out that what appear ap-pear to be traces of a prlmltlvo stato of servitude existed in Staffordshire, whore tho laborers employed In tho haulago of coal continued to bo known as "bondsmen" a name probably coming 'down from a remote period; a supposition which receives support from a peculiar service required of them, known as "bulldasos." This consisted in working at times in tho morning without receiving any payment pay-ment beyond a drink of alo. This custom cus-tom of exacting labor without pay is supposed to roprosent ,somo ancient sorvlco required from their tenants by tho monks of tho Abbey of Build-was, Build-was, in Shropshire, whence tho namo was derived. |
