Show Roosevelt vs. Pentecost. ADR. PENTECOST of New York takes exception to President Roosevelt's stand in maintaining maintain-ing that the laws of God and nature should not be interfered with. Those of God are embodied in three words, "Increase and multiply." Those of nature na-ture are always silently operating Loth in the vegetable and animal kingdom. The doctor is a firm believer n the Malthusian theory, which would suppress, sup-press, by artificial means, the workings work-ings of the natural law. If Mr. Pentecost Pente-cost is a pastor of souls, it is fair to presume that th "poor and ignorant" are not pew-holders in his church. As fathers and mothers,' they would be criminals and consequently not entitled en-titled to a- seat in a cushioned pew where Dr. Pentecost officiated. Christ might gather the little bare-footed? urchins ur-chins of Judea around him, bless them and tell the world that one of the proofs of his divine mission was that "the poor had the gospel preached to them," but that doctrine Is antiquated. Rev. H. Pentecost has said "that marriage and child-bearing, as it goes on among the poor and ignorant, is a crime against the race." A crime must be a violation of some law, either divine or human. Poverty is not a crime. It is a mark of blessedness. "Blessed a7e the poor in spirit." To beget children complies with the divine di-vine command, "Increase and multiply." multi-ply." It violates no human law, at least those enacted under the infiu- i ence of Christian civilzation. God's laws are equally binding on the rich and intelligent as they are 'on the poor and ignorant. If the latter, who are not subject to the law of fashion, lead a purely natural life, why condemn them as criminals for leading a life in conformity with the divine command, com-mand, whilst the former, for suppressing suppress-ing parental instinct, and disobeying the laws of God to insure ease and ready access to the ball room, are dubbed the progressive portion of the human race. Mr. Pentecost must be wiser than Infinite Wisdom, as his new ethical creed, which differs from that of the Creator, is preached in the name of science and progress. If the enlightened preacher would take the time and trouble to figure out criminal statistics he would find the balance in favor of the rich and intelligent. intel-ligent. Supposing in the battle of life the ratio of rich and poor be as twenty to 20,000. and that where one of the twenty -fell by the wayside 1,000 of the poor fell also; but the rich man in his fall gambled $100,000 of his neighbor's property, whilst the 1,000 poor stole or cheated to the amount of $5 each, which class would show the greater criminals? The one may be occupying a front pew 'in Mr. Pentecost's church, whilst the other unfortunate 1,0000 are doing, service in the penitentiary. But that is civilzation and progress. Mr. Pentecost is a time server with pagan ideas. President Roosevelt is levelheaded level-headed and a man with Christian sentiments. sen-timents. What is needed more than anything else is a religious sentiment among all classes. This the burlesque divine has not. and what he has not himself he cannot give. Next, a healthy public sentiment that would teach our boys and girls, whether rich or poor, that it was no disgrace to work in the kitchen or work shops, and that those who were so employed were entitled to more respect re-spect and praise than the professional ladies and gentlemen who were non-producers, non-producers, sought easy jobs or lived only by sucking the national pap. There is more than elbow room for our population if increased a hundredfold. hundred-fold. Why object to home-production, seeing that foreigners come every day, find employment and do well. Let the home product "increase and multiply," but teach them to work with their hands as well as their brains, and with a thoroughly Christian sentiment that .poverty is no crime, the youth of the country growing up to manhood and womanhood will find work, according to their station in life. |
