Show LINES BY A WELL KNOWN CHURCHMAN OF SALT LAKE. Thanks. Thanks resides in the heart alone, Therin it has its stately throne. Words are but useless, empty sounds, When not based on real grounds. What more easy to do for me Than to express my thanks to thee? Hut this would never prove at all My gratitude, however small; Besides, expressions only mean That ycu and I in doubt have been. Thou, like Thomas, would'st not believe be-lieve 'Till proof in words thou didst receive. This "doubting spirit I'd uphold Should I to thee my thanks unfold. This action, also, would suppose That I in thee no faith repose; Thanks in words would then imply That thou or I believed a lie; The issue, then, is plain and clear And merits each attentive ear The best way to thank, after all. Is not to give thanks at all. |
