Logan was in the senate he foresaw rhat the tariff question was going to become one of the gravest Issues of congressional consideration, and he wisely determined to devote some time to the study of it Accordingly he sat down and addressed the following note to the librarian of congress; "My Dear Spofford: -Will you please to send to my house whatever works on the tariff, protection, free trade, etc. which you may happen to have in the library. ' The next day. while the senator was at lunch, up drove two express wagons loaded load-ed down with books of everv size One of the drivers handed in this note: "Dear Senator: I send herewith two wagon-loads of the books. Will tend two more this afternoon. Will send the rest tomorrow if I can get to it. but our clerks are so busy just now that I cannot promise prom-ise you for certain. Tours. "A. R. SPOFFORD." Senator Loga.n sent the books back as fast as he could, but he thought the joke on himself so good that he was the first to tell it. |
