Show THE REAL ENEMIES OF THE j CHURCH. j The Colorado Catholic has moved to i Salt Lake City, where it will have to I wrestle with the Mormon problem, j Henceforth it will be kiiown as the In- i termountain Catholic. The Republic. Our esteemed contemporary is in error. er-ror. It is not the mission of the Inter-mountain Inter-mountain Catholic to "wrestle with the Mormon problem." For forty years Mormons and Catholics have lived in this valley at peace with each other, and this paper will do nothing' to bring discord where, for nearly half a century, cen-tury, good will has reigned. The Intermountain Catholic, how- I ever, will never hesitate to expose the real enemies of the church and hold them up to the scorn of righteous Catholics. Cath-olics. Our attention has been called to the following paragraph from a snarling, snarl-ing, anti-Irish paper, called The Review, Re-view, published in St. Louis: Father Hecker's biographer. Rev. Walter Elliott, C. S. P.. is devoting his pen to a real saint now. In the October Octo-ber Catholic World. he ha an article on "St. Vincent de Paul and the Sisters of Charity." It is evidently intended, though, to be a side-light on a certain phase of Hecker's life. It is hard to conceive an honest m?.n giving utterance to such a villainous ! suggestion as that contained in the above paragraph. But when we are told that the man who penned it posos as a Catholic, it seems almost incredi- Kl, TV,. mnr ..Kv ,--, ,TA , : t V, honesty and integrity of Father Elliott and who would refer to the venerable Father Hecker in such a sneering manner, man-ner, is the real enemy of the church, and with such it is the duty of a Catholic Cath-olic paper to "wrestle," rather than with those outside the church, whose culture and good breeding keep them from indulging in vulgarity and falsehood. false-hood. Father Elliot, Father Hecker and their confreres in the Congregation of St. Paul the Apostle, are men of superior su-perior learning, practised in virtue and possessed of" remarkable zeal for the welfare of the church of God. It is a pity that under the color of Catholic journalism a slanderous scribe should be given opportunity to villify these noble men. It seems to be the especial mission .of this St. Louis Review to breed dis- IU1U aim (vccjj nine iii U1J I I el llOIlsj. The IntermouBtain Catholic has a pretty thorough knowledge of the animus ani-mus which permeated the rank and file of the late A. P. A. organization, but j that band of bigots was decency itself in comparison to this anti-Irish creature crea-ture in charge of The Review. The par- i ticular object which this Irish Catholic baiter has in view is his occupation, which would soon be lost were it not for the band of dupes whom he succeeds suc-ceeds in deluding into the belief that between the German and Irish Catholics Cath-olics in the United States there is unrelenting unre-lenting warfare. . It is intolerable that such a creature should receive attention anywhere. Ee- tween the Irish and. German Catholics in the United States there is always cordial good will, notwithstanding this Review and a few others ' of his kidney. kid-ney. But this man continues'' week after week to instil in the. hearts and minds of German Catholics hatred for Irish priests and Irish people a people who have always been kind to their German co-re.ligionists and gensrous without reserve to thousands of German priests all over the United States. More insidious and poisonous to the body Catholic in America is the Irish-Catholic Irish-Catholic baiter who edits The Review than all the bigots who have risen up in America. The immediate effect of the continued attacks on Irish priests in America by sueh creatures as the editor of The Re-vie- will be to turn the good will of the Irish people against the men whom the Review professes to serve. Racial wueLiuns are to be deploied always, but when men persist in keeping them alive for the sole purpose of increasing their bank accounts, Irish Catholic spirit will not be wanting in vindicating the villainous charges hurled against it. As for the mean, contemptible slurs which this Review seeks opportunity to cast upon the Paulist Fathers, it is enough to say that the name of Father Hecker is defiled when it comes out of the mouth of the anti-Irish editor of the- Review. .
