Show r ( ARCHBISHOP KEANE. At a meeting of the Archbishops of the country held a few years ago at Washington, a letter from the Cardinal Secretary of State, removing Archbishop Arch-bishop Keane from the Rectorship of the Catholic University, was read to the assembled Prelates. This letter caused general indignation among Catholics all over the country. The causes which conspired to bring about Archbishop Keane's removal are too weu Known to be recounted now. The enemiesof the university the real enemies en-emies of Catholicity in America rejoiced re-joiced at the humiliation of the man whose life was one of devotion and self-abnegation self-abnegation in behalf of the great seat of learning at Washington, of which honest Catholics are proud. The object of a revengeful and spiteful spite-ful clique surprised and disappointed his traducers by instantly complying with the orders contained in the letter of Cardinal Rampolla. From the day of Archbishop Keane's departure from the university until his J return thereto on Thursday of last week, that institution has felt the need of his supporting hand. On the 11th inst. the Archbishops assembled as-sembled at the university in annual meeting and again a letter was read Ilium vciiuiiiiii jtauipuija, me cardinal Secretary of State. But what a contrast con-trast to the letter referred to above! In this letter, Cardinal Rampolla assured the assembled Prelates of the "deep, constant and earnest interest which the Pope takes in the university rnd his earnest wishes of the success of Archbishop Arch-bishop Keane's mission." This mission is the completion of the endowment fund of the university, for which purpose pur-pose the former Rector returns to America at the urgent request of the Bishops of the countrv and fortified with a letter of approval for his mission mis-sion by the Holy Father himself. Thus does Archbishop Keane commence com-mence the work practically where he left off on the day of his retirement from Washington. Detailed comment is quite unnecessary. |
