Show AN AESURD REPORT. In an interview with Archbishop Keane, that distinguished prelate is reported re-ported to have aid: "The Pope has accented ac-cented the result of the war between the Un'ited States and Spain, and has determined that the priests in the islands that passed from Spain to America shall support the American government in all things." We do not know whether Archbishop Keane uttered these sentiments or not. We are morally certain, however, that the Holy Father never gave utterance to such an unreserved and unaualified statement. This whole Philippine ques tion is still an cpm one, and shall remain re-main so until congress determines upon a definite policy. Being an open political politi-cal question, upon which the American people are evenly divided, it is the height of absurdity to suppose that the Pope would order the priests in the Philippines to support the American government "in all things." If such be the attitude of the Pope on the duty of the priests in the Philippines, such I naturally would be his attitude on the duty of American priests. The whole thing seems absurd. There is always so much more satisfaction in hearing directly frcm the Holy Father than through the medium of a press report. |
