Show Ireland's Famous Shrine. Lough Derg is the holiest spot in Ireland Ire-land and one of the oldest and most famous fa-mous pilgrimages in the world. It wis the scene of the retreat .the tears and prayers .of St. Patrick for Ireland. Lough Derg Is situated in the parish of Templecarney, County Donegal, Diocese of Clogher. Its circumference is thirteen miles, and it contains two principal islands, viz., Saint's Island, or the Island of St. Daebhoc, who flourished flour-ished 610, and was a disciple of St. Patrick: Station Island, or the Island of the Purgatory of St. Patrick. Each year a pilgrimage opens on June 1, and closes on Lady Day, August 15. Each pilgrimage lasts at least three days, which are spent In prayer, watching watch-ing in St. Patrick's Church one whole night, and strictly fasting. During the whole time the pilgrimage is made barefooted. The fare Is simple one meal of bread and water or black tta daily. |
