The latter in his address gave this retrospect: "Two-hundred and twenty-six twenty-six years have passed since he laid down in the wilderness to his last sleep. What wondrous events' fill the space and hurry through the crowding years! The magnificent Louis; the fierce protector; pro-tector; revolution after revolution; old kingdoms overthrown; new emperora and republics In their stead, mighty people and mighty convulsions are si lo by side in earnest procession a.s look back to his time: but there at tha other end of the vista, serene and undiminished, un-diminished, we see the black-rob"! priest, a dominating and immortal figure. fig-ure. Build here for him the enduring bronze;' here where the great north, pours forth its world of waters; hero where the Almighty clove a way for them to the sea. and mingles all their waves; here where nature is sweetest and noblest; here where commerce moves its wealth along, and the strong ships bear to the far lands the bounty of nature; here in the sight of million-,-who journey when the summer call.- them to rest : and let all who shall 1. .k: upon the memorial ponder upon t' miracle by which the simple man dob; -his duty to his fellows, adoring his God, has come to be exalted and honored forever, anil on the base of his monument monu-ment write his own simple words: -r feared not death, and I regard no happiness hap-piness a.s greater than that of losing my life for the glory o Him who h.-) made us a!!.'
