The lives of many worshipers in th church of St. Anthony, in South t Louis, - were saved Sunday by mere chance through the discovery of a j large quantity. of dynamite under the altar. The explosive had been cunningly cun-ningly placed so that a fuse, connected with a candle, would be ignited at a tiniO when the congregation was present. pres-ent. Th discovery of"- the dynamite was accidental, The lay brother, in lighting light-ing the candles, found that oile did not burn properly. He took it frohi Us socket, and in doing so brought the fuse to view. This was fastened to the rear of tha candlestick, which 'was attached to dynamite under the altar. The fuse was so arranged that when the candle had burned . fr a certain time it wouid have ignited and caused , ah explosion which, because of the crowded condition of the church at the time, not only would have destroyed j the building, but would have caused ' great loss of life. F. M.. assistant pastor of the church, was loath to speak on the subject, sub-ject, since he did not wish the incident to gain undue notoriety. He said, however, how-ever, that it is a fact that the candle could not be lighted by the lay brother, and that when he made an investigation investiga-tion he did find a. fuse attached to the candle at one end and the dynamite at the other. , |
