The Connaught Eeis will be held in County Hall, Galway, on Aug. 17, IS and 19. The committee in charge has issued a circular saying that the great yearly increase in the number of the competitors has compelled them to prolong the Feis to three days. The year before last there were 280 on the competition list; last year this number ran up to 500, and. to all appearances, there will be at east 700 or 800 competitors this year. It is well that it should be so; it is a proof that Connacht is at length awaking from its deep slumber and beginning to interest itself at long las in its own language and its own music as other provinces have already done. There have been four completely new competitions added, and in the literary lit-erary section the competitors are at perfect liberty to write on any subject they please, so that every single Connacht writer may have full scope to compete in accordance with Ids age and ability.. It is evident that these competitions will entail en-tail an additional expense on the branch funds, which are already heavily taxed, and the committee hope that the people of Connacht will not fail to increase their help in proportion. Hitherto we must confess that we have received very little support except from the City and County of Galway, and a few Roscommon town and it seems to us a most unfair arrangement that the expenses of the Feis of all Connacht should have to be defrayed by the population of a single city or one single county. Another fact which has come under our notice is that it is exactly the same people who help us year after year. It is our firm reliance on those people which has encouraged us to held our Feis this year on greatly extended lines.'-but we hope that tho other Irishmen of Connacht will not leave this chosen few to bear alone, this year also, the burden of the work of Irish nationality. The names of the subscribers will be printed in the programme of the Feis, and any of the undermentioned un-dermentioned will thankfully receive contributions: Rev. A. J. Considine, C. C, president; Rev. X. Fegan, C. C; D. Lehano. B. A.; M. Usher, vice I presidents; P. J. Gannon. M. Murphy, Hon. Treasurers; Treas-urers; M. Lohan, J. J. O'Xeill, M. A., Hon. Secre-i Secre-i taries. There will be literary competitions, oratory, recitations, reci-tations, story-telling, conversations, singing, instrumental instru-mental music and dancing. Boston Pilot. |
